The TranzCoastal Train service between Christchurch, Kaikoura and Picton in the South Island of New Zealand. Train Travel Auckland, Hamilton, National Park, Ohakune, Palmerston North, Wellington on the Overlander train. The world famous TranzAlpine train is rated as one of the world's top six train journeys.
Travelling between Christchurch and Picton, the TranzCoastal journey alongside the lonely New Zealand Pacific Ocean coastline, where a roaring, windblown sea meets enormous bush glad hill and mountains. If you like, stop in Kaikoura for the day and experience some of the colorful townships world famous eco tourism activities, such as Whale Watching or swimming with the dolphins. The TranzCoastal travels through 22 tunnels and crosses 175 bridges, one of them being New Zealand’s only road-rail bridge. As on The TranzAlpine, The TranzCoastal includes an open air viewing carriage where all your senses are awakened with the clean, fresh, sea air. The Overlander is a journey through the heart of the North Island from New Zealand, travelling between Auckland to Wellington. Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, popular with young and old alike. You also see fantastic views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges.

The Overlander as a daily service finishes on the Sunday, 22nd April and reverts back to a three days a week winter service (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) starting Friday, April 27th, 2007.

The Overlander as a daily service resumes again on Friday, 30th November 2007. Ends - Sunday 4th May 2008
Tranz Scenic New Zealand operates the World famous TranzAlpine. The train leaves Christchurch on the east coast, crosses the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, winds its way through the stunning Waimakariri Gorge, passes over massive viaducts, crosses New Zealand's greatest mountain range, the Southern Alps, and travels through lush beech forests and past serene lakes, before arriving in Greymouth on the beautiful West Coast.
Our journey is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 metres.
